On Wednesday, early hours of January between 1:45 to 2:15, Iran attacked the two Iraqi bases of US housing with 22 ballistic missiles, one was hit at Al Asad airbase and one in Irbil base, west of Baghdad where the coalition troops were targeted but Iraq’s military reported no casualties.
Iran reacted after the burial of Qassim Soleimani the General Minister of Iran’s elite, paramilitary Quds Force and the architect of Iran’s foreign policy across the Middle East was killed in a missile attack by the orders of US President Trump on early Friday on January 4 outside the Baghdad airport.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated, “tens of surface-to-surface missiles were launched to crush the occupied airbase of terrorist and aggressor army of the US in Al Asad, the hub for American military operations in western Iraq”.
However, a news agency Tasnim from Iran reported that Fateh-313 and Qiam missiles were used in the attack and the US forces failed to intercept them because they were equipped with cluster warheads. The warheads also caused “tens of explosions” at Al Asad.
Hence, there was no response after the retaliation of Iran from Washington ton but Trump said in its tweet that all is well and US forces suffered no casualties and the bases sustained only minimal damage. In an interview, Trump stated, “the precautions are taken, the dispersal of forces, and an early warning system that worked very well”, and declared: “Iran appears to be standing down.”
While the Army General Mark Milley, the US’s top military officer stated, “I believed the attack was meant to be deadly” and further said his “personal assessment was that Iran intended to cause structural damage, destroy vehicles, equipment, aircraft and to kill personnel”.
It is said to be that, Iran intentionally avoids causing the casualties despite the furious warnings from Iran which stated in a clear manner that the US would pay a price for the killing. But according to President Trump’s statement, no one was hurt in the retaliation attack.
A Supreme Leader from Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei spoke, “the attack was a slap in the face for the US and called for an end to the US presence in the Middle East”.
Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani spoke,” the final answer to Qassim Soleimani’s assassination would be to kick all US forces out of the region”.
After the missile attack on the US airbase located in Iraq, a Ukraine airline crashed shortly after takeoff in Iran’s territory. Therefore, there is no evidence that could link these two incidents.
